Friday fun 2

Here's a torrent for a Disco Documentary. It's called Disco_-_Spinning_The_Story_ . Saw it last night and it was good. It's all from a very comercial point of view. Kc and the sunshine band, chic etc, you know... but for me it was interesting to see it from that perspective. Disco was after all a world wide fenomenon that no one could escape. Well worth a an hour of your life.

Swedish radio show "klingan" had a show on Norman Whitfield yesterday. It's an interview from 1980 and you can listen to it here: LISTEN

Vi hör min intervju från 1980 med den legendariska amerikanska soulproducenten och kompositören Norman Whitfield som gått ur tiden. Han är mannen bakom massor av hits på skivbolaget Motown, bl.a. ”I heard it through the grapevine” med Marvin Gaye, ”Papa was a rollin’ stone” med The Temptations och ”War” med Edwin Starr. Whitfields specialitet var också att verkligen använda hela studion som ett jättelikt instrument. Han skapade stora, rörliga ljud och musik-collage. Det blir som breda cinemascope-bilder hemma i våra högtalare. Jag jämför honom med indiska A R Rahman som i grunden förändrat indisk filmmusik lika mycket som Whitfield förändrade soulmusikens utveckling. Vi hör också musik från Brasilien, USA, Pakistan, Ryssland, Tyskland, Colombia, Etiopien och Turkiet.

Nurnberg 47 - Hundarna brinner

I had this track up a long time ago in a youtube clip but since it's such a nice track i suggest we put it up again as a download. This track is taken from the soundtrack to the swedish cult movie "G - för gemenskap" and the band is acctually called Reeperbahn. In the film they are suposed to be a nazi band, therefore the Nurnberg name. Although, nothing happened in Nurnberg 1947, it happened 1945-46.

Oh this anxiety... I'm a bit pissed off today. Didn't get a job I really wanted so to I thought this was a suitable track... Produced by Martin Ruschent. Great track, kind of cheesy sax solo that I should have skipped if I was Ruschent... but never mind, sometimes you need that cheese to appreciate the rest.

This week sees the release of Double Night Time, the terrific new album by Morgan Geist. It's the New York-based producer's first solo LP in over a decade, his attentions having been focussed on running Environ Records, home to Kelley Polar and Metro Area, the acclaimed production duo Darshan Jesrani and Geist himself. Featuring vocals by Junior Boys' Jeremy Greenspan, Double Night Time finds Geist exploring traditional song-form as well as the deep electronic textures with which he made his name.

Here's a torrent for a great documentary called Surfwise.

Like many American outsider-adventurers Dorian Doc Paskowitz set out to realize a utopian dream. Abandoning a successful medical practice he sought self-fulfillment by taking up the nomadic life of a surfer. But unlike other American searchers like Thoreau or Kerouac Paskowitz took his wife and nine children along for the ride all eleven of them living in a 24 foot camper. Together they lived a life that would be unfathomable to most but enviable to anyone who ever relinquished their dreams to a straight job.

Stephen Hawkings och Music InMotion Onsdag 20/8 på Debaser

Är sommaren över? Jag vet faktiskt inte. Delvis... Nu på onsdag så är det då dags för sista Stephen Hawkings på Debaser för denna gången. Vi har ju haft fantastiska kvällar och planerar att avsluta med en lika bra. Dagen till ära har vi bjudit in dans/musik-kollektivet Music InMotion som spelar och dansar improviserat och live. Sjukt bra faktiskt. Så här skriver de själva:

Music in motion är två dansare och två musiker som möts i en improvisation vilket betyder att föreställningen skapas i nuet och beslut om föreställningens riktning tas i stunden den pågår. På så sätt uppstår ett nytt framträdande varje gång vi uppträder.
Musikerna spelar elbas och elgitarr och har varsin looppedal som redskap för att komponera musiken. Resten av skapandet för både ljud och rörelse är upp till inspirationen i stunden, samarbetet mellan dansare och musiker och mellan utövare och publik.

Music InMotion: Elinor Matti, Siri Persson, Kim Walltin och Niklas Tjäder

Emil, Harry och revK spelar ju både ute och inne. Ute blir det en fin blandning av sommarens bästa. Inne blir det en fin blandning av höstens stundande dansmusik. Som vanligt med ett klart fokus på psykedelisk rock disco ethno jazz fusion...

Pink Floyd live in Pompeii

Here's a torrent for a great great concert film by Pink Floyd.This is really really god stuff. beautiful cinematography as well. Here's some more info from wikipedia: Pink Floyd: Live at Pompeii is a 1972 film featuring Pink Floyd performing six songs at the ruins of the empty ancient amphitheatre in Pompeii, Italy. It was directed by Adrian Maben.

The performances of "Echoes", "A Saucerful of Secrets", and "One of These Days" were filmed from October 4, 1971 to October 7, 1971. The remaining songs were filmed in a Paris studio, along with additional front projection footage for insertion into the Pompeii performances.[1] The sequences in Paris were filmed in late 1971/early 1972, and can be distinguished by the absence of Rick Wright's beard. This version was released in theaters in September 1972 and is also included on the DVD edition as an extra feature. In August of 1974, another version was released combining the original film with supposed recording sessions of The Dark Side of the Moon at Abbey Road Studios. These sessions were actually staged for the film, as the recording of the album had been completed when these sessions were filmed in January of 1973 and the band was mixing the album at the time.

Ok, so now i guess the holidays are kind of over. So back to work.

This fall we at Stephen Hawkings thought that we would put up a bit more music in downloadable format, some vinyl rips etc and a bit more cultural stuff, reading, films etc. So if you have any suggestions, please don't hesitate to send us links and other cool stuff.

Paris Is Burning is a 1990 documentary film directed by Jennie Livingston. Filmed in the mid-to-late 1980s, it chronicles the ball culture of New York City and the poor, African American and Latino gay and transgendered community involved in it. Many consider Paris Is Burning to be an invaluable documentary of the end of the "Golden Age" of New York City drag balls, as well as a thoughtful exploration of race, class, and gender in America.

Plus this film also includes footage of the early days of vougueing and has nice early house music... great!

Hmmm. Onsdag innebär inte bara sol utan det är ju dags för Stephen hawkings # 5 på debaser. Efter förra gångens Stockholmsutbyte med rollerboys så kör vi nu standarduppsättningen emil, harry och revK. Som sig bör så spelas det weirdo ethno balearic jazz boogie grejer på uteserveringen. Emil har lovat att spela så jävla baleariskt att ni kommer bajsa på er. Det ser vi fram emot.

Inne i grottan pumas det på med långsamma mörka beats för den som kan och vill utnyttja sin rytm på ett extra bra sätt. Långsamt är ju som vi alla vet betydligt sexigare än snabbt...
